British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several entry passages down to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
